Jim Heydrich is the Canadian-born nephew of one of the most feared men in the Gestapo. When his family returns to Germany just before the war, Jim arrives in the Third Reich as a young, sensitive theater student, both protected by and encumbered by his famous relation. Resisting an invitation to join the Nazis, he instead finds himself a member of an English-language theater troupe working in Occupied Europe. Unbeknownst to Jim, the leaders of the theater troupe, Nigel Burnside and his sister Margaret, are not the English fascists they appear, but members of the British Secret Service, using the theater troupe to recruit spies from among the Anglophile German officers who come to their productions.
Disillusioned with both sides of the war, Jim is trying to defect to neutral Ireland when he stumbles into one of Nigel and Margaret’s most closely held secrets—a Hungarian physicist they are smuggling out of Europe. While trying to extricate himself from this unwelcome knowledge, he both manages to draw the attention of the Gestapo and to convince the British Secret Service that he is a Nazi spy, a threat to their plans who must be eliminated.

It was just a traveling cast of characters touring Europe during WWII. Even the German SS troops and Gestapo agents enjoyed the Oscar Wilde play An Ideal Husband. Stars of the troupe actually were British spies, from various backgrounds, sent to pick up and safely deliver a physicist to a specified pick-up point off the coast of Italy. While that is going on, the Germans are having their own spy problems as “special” intelligence gatherers compete and the reader is often left amazed as the truth of who is whom is revealed. The British mission is successful, though some of the “players” don’t survive or are captured. Unfortunately, some of the survivors had no idea that their traveling stage production was a haven for spies. A well crafted plot worth the time.Product details

Wolf Hook A World War II Thriller eBook Michael Wallace Reviews
This truly was a fascinating book! I was transported back to World War II and felt I was experiencing what the characters went through on each page. I know it sounds trite, but I truly could not put this book down. I truly did not want the story to end. All I can say is, I am happy this book was written and I highly recommend the purchase of this book!
It was a nice change to read a book that wasn't part of an ongoing series. This story was about a troupe of actors during WWII. They are trying to smuggle themselves out of Nazi Germany and then Italy. Lots of twists in the storyline kept things moving pretty well. Characters are well written, and the dialog flowed well. I've found a new author to read.
Better if a movie; hard to picture the "action." It kept me reading, and that's usually my way of assessing a book. Not the best WWII thriller, and not much of a thriller to me. Interesting plot...a troupe of actors with a Canadian young man being the nephew of a brutal Nazi leader. Barely romantic, but that's not my criteria for a thriller. All in all an okay read.
I have no idea WHY I read this until the end!
For the first chunk of the tale the reader has absolutely NO idea when/where/what is going on.
The basic premise is just too unlikely to be vaguely believable.
The author has an predilection to lapse into boring detail which is a good reason to revert to skimming paragraphs/pages.
The author has talent to write - maybe needs a good editor?
Acceptabel story about a group of english speaking actors who cross worldvwar 2 europe to vive some theatre shows. Ons of the actors is a nephew of Heinrich Heydrich, one of the most feared and powerfull man in nazi germany. But there are some suspicions about the group and they are watched by a membres of the gestapo and a police inspector. What is the real purpose of this group and will t hey s ucceed. .
Well written, not a great thriller, but a nice plot and sweet ending.
From the opening line, this novel grabs the reader and pulls. Michael Wallace crafted a solid historical thriller with engaging characters, good pacing, and surprising twists (some of which really shouldn't have been so surprising). I wonder if Oscar Wilde fans have a richer experience reading this novel, and if there are less obvious allusions to his works. One negative about the novel is that is that sometimes it seemed the characters used contemporary language. "Give me a break" to express exasperation is a more obvious example. Other than some dialogue that anachronistic, the novel was quite believable. As with other Michael Wallace novels, he describes scenes and actions in such a way as to help the reader visualize it.
Fine WW2 era suspense story complete with British spies, German traitors, suspicious characters and numerous twists and turns to keep you guessing. From mention of the mad scientist Gabriel Beaurieux given his odd work with severed heads to that of the Teatro Florentino in Florence as a place I hope to visit one day book kept me engaged throughout. Liked the book overall and leave you with one final exchange to pique your interest "We prefer to stand." "Of course you would," Wenck said. "Easier to run for your life that way..."
